With those caveats, the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 AF-S is very, very sharp on a 16 MP DX camera. It's super-sharp and contrasty at all apertures everywhere in the DX image, and only slightly less contrasty in the far corners at f/2.8. The 17-55/2.8 DX is a very sharp lens on DX. The new Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 VR beats it because it is more robust, it has a built-in picture stabilizer, quicker AF drive, but the optics are not that much better. The new Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 VR has much less chromatic aberration CA and works better 2nQK.
